While I was writing my previous post I kind of got distracted and started ranting about things. The rant ended up taking over the update so I decided to separate it out and publish it as a separate post. Just getting a few things off my chest:
I’ve always wanted to do a chat show. An internet chat show. Ideally it would be 5 - 8 mins long and follow a weekly schedule with a different hilarious guest each week. So I decided to attempt to make one to see if it was possible. The previous chat show was made purely as an experiment, just to see if it would work. And it did. I really liked the result and I found it funny and thought it was close enough to my original intentions. I came out of it with even more ideas than when I went in, ready to make more. I put a lot of effort into the chat show. However, I feel like some of the others involved just turned up. This meant it took a lot longer than it should have to film and I don’t think it was as good as it could have been.
The intention was to make many more episodes, but things fell apart. I wanted to do a Christmas episode, for which I wrote several scripts - each different depending on the guest - but apart from myself and one other guy, no one wanted to get involved. It really annoys me. Actors would volunteer then just disappear. Absolutely no contact. I don’t mind if an actor doesn’t like the script or the project as long as they let me know beforehand rather than stringing everyone along and then vanishing.
I know so many actors that are unlikely to ever get anywhere because they think projects are beneath them. For example, I worked with one guy - he was working part-time whilst he tried to pursue his acting career - who I asked if he’d like to do something when he was free. He was only there 20 hours a week, if that, so I assumed he’d like to. Instead, he told me he ‘didn’t work for free’. He’d previously shown a short film he was in, decent budget and production values. His role was ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ and the film was average, but his acting was absolutely dire. I’m not exaggerating in the slightest. He used to complain to me how he missed out on roles because of his ‘look’, but I’m slightly suspicious that wasn’t the case. This really aggravated me.
You see, the problem I have with filmmaking is that it is a collaborate effort. You need several people all working toward a common goal to make something good. This is why it can be so frustrating. I have ideas upon ideas that I can’t realise because I can’t find people with any go about them. I’ve started projects before that came to a halt after a day because actors and crew just couldn’t be bothered anymore. I worked with a guy who arrived an hour late, then told me he had to leave in an hour to ‘do his nan’s garden’. How unbelievably selfish. You’ve got several other people waiting on you and then when you finally bother to turn up you get everyone rushing to accommodate you whilst you phone in your performance and then leave. The absence of one person can bring a project to its knees.
I just wish I could meet others as passionate about filming as me - or at least meet someone with some sort of integrity and work ethic. At the moment I feel like I live in a town of unmotivated losers who just take the easy road every time. I know so many people that went to University to do a degree in something they like, only to graduate, see the lack of jobs and decide ‘I’m going to be a teacher’, because it’s the easy option.
I’m sorry I’ve been so negative, but I just needed to share some of my issues. Hopefully things will pick up.
I’ve somewhat neglected this tumblr in recent time. It’s been quite a while since I’ve logged on to even check in, and nowadays, with the advent of Jennifer Lawrence and other young, talented and successful people, I’ve started to neglect my main tumblr also - it makes me depressed seeing their faces everywhere. However, before this post becomes an outlet for my jealousy (how hard is it to say ‘OK’ to a talent scout when they notice you have a nice face) I’m going to let you know what’s been happening (on the slim chance you’re interested)
I always wanted this tumblr to be a pure outlet for my creative side. But, as you can probably tell, I’ve not been very creative of late. My excuse for this lack of creativity? Pure and simply, ‘Life’. Things haven’t been going the best recently and other aspects of my life have had to priority. Also, this hasn’t really left me in the creative mind frame of late.
The last video I posted on here was the ‘Late Night Loose Affiliation Chat Shoe’ - wordy I know, it’s just going to be called ‘Loose Affiliation’ hin future. I really enjoyed making it and I was really happy with the result, after all it supposed to look like a badly edited chat show.
Since then, I’ve also made a corporate video - which turned out okay - and I volunteered for a local website where I did a sort of news report on an event in our town - which again turned out okay. I’ve also filmed another episode of the chat show which I have yet to edit (the cameras we used were terrible so I’m a bit apprehensive about even viewing the footage. I’ve also done a fair bit of writing, and I’m hopefully going to be filming a short film in the near future.
So, from now on I’m going to make this tumblr a much more comprehensive log/diary of what’s going on in my creative life - a tad egotistical I know. I’ll not be reblogging anything on here, unless it’s really amazing, as I have another blog for that. Here I’m going to focus on my own work.
So watch this space!
as people of great taste, please could you watch our new video and then decide where all the millions of hollywood dollars are being spent if this kind of masterpiece can be made by ourselves for next to nothing.
